When Too Much Wine Turns Into A Bad Thing

Posted by The Wine Whore |

Needless to say, naming yourself "The Wine Whore" invites some interesting questions from family, friends, and sometimes even strangers. While I was cruising the wine blogosphere, this post from "Kate Drinks Wine" made me think about this question that people usually ask me right after they discover that I've been whoring myself for the grape:

"You must drink ALL of the time! How many bottles of wine do you drink in a week?"

Ok, so here's the deal. I drink what I want, when I want.

If that means Bordeaux straight from the bottle... I'm down. If that means cheap light beer from a can... I can't complain. Sometimes I like a nice glass of Scotch or whiskey to unwind from a long day... don't knock it!

Just because you love or even just enjoy a nice glass of wine doesn't mean you have to be connected to it 24x7 like some sort of grape juice I.V. drip. Sometimes I go weeks where I ONLY drink wine. Then I'll go through others where beer is "what's for dinner".

I will say though that having cases of free wine available at my disposal has increased my average wine consumption.... but it has also taught me that there is a time and place for everything. As long as you are having a good time, you're doing it right!

So, how many bottles of wine do I drink in a week? Just read the site and you'll get a pretty good idea!

Do I have a drinking problem? How many bottles of wine do YOU drink in a week?

Your line: "Just because you love or even just enjoy a nice glass of wine doesn't mean you have to be connected to it 24x7 like some sort of grape juice I.V. drip. Sometimes I go weeks where I ONLY drink wine. Then I'll go through others where beer is "what's for dinner"

I 110% agree with you. Thanks for the shout out!

Like everyone, the amount of wine I drink in a week all depends on what is happening that week! There is one thing I can't do and that is enjoy wine EVERY day. I take 1-3 days off a week, especially since I'm training for a marathon and have some looong runs in which wine wouldn't quite play well with.

If I had to guess, I bet I open 2-4 bottles a week. Maybe a friend opens 1-2. But since I share my bottle 99% of the time, I personally probably drink 1.5 to 2 bottles a week or 5-7 glasses.

Now Randy, Is there a difference between the amount of bottles you open vs. the actual amount of wine you drink? How much do you share with the Mrs?

That's a really good question!

Unless Mrs. Whore either isn't in the mood for wine, or just doesn't like the particular bottle, I usually share it with her. I do enjoy killing an entire bottle by myself every now and then, but that's not an every night kinda thing. I would say that when we do share a bottle, I usually end up drinking more of it. She tends to get bad heartburn... and I tend to drink faster than her! :P

How about you? Do you like to share?

Dude, I get this a lot also seeing as i work in a wine store.

I taste maybe 5-10 wines per day but that does not mean that I swallow, nor does it mean that I drink a bottle of wine a day.

Sure we could get a lot of negative points on an alcoholism test, but that means nothing.

I hope you continue to enjoy your wines, in spite of this matter ;P

Free bottles do help increase consumption, but in my case it also helps eliminate the pressure to consume something because you paid good money for it. If the sample isn't enjoyable, it goes down the drain.

On the other hand there have been a number of bottles I have sat on for sometime, pulled out for a nice evening and found them disappointing. For some reason, I typically finish those bottles.

I concur that wine is great, but it's only one of many drinks in this fine world. I kind of think of it similar to my favorite restaurants. I frequent them often, but don't want to eat at them every night of the week.

I think I average half a bottle a day. My wife and I share a bottle almost every night. If we dont drink wine during the week, we sure make up for it on the weekend. @fgj1013

Thank you Chris! This has actually taught me to enjoy my wine even more! When I drink, I focus on more than just my wine... and that makes it even more fun! :)

You know what Matt, despite the fact that the wine is often free... I really try to finish each and every bottle. Unless it is either really bad or I have opened more than I can drink, do I ever throw it down the sink. Worst case, I leave a glass or two for day two, but that is a rare occasion! :)

I really like your analogy! Drinking wine has actually taught me to enjoy different qualities in other things such as food, life, and even love. Maybe I'm just drunk and taking it to far, but that's the way I feel!

Half a bottle a day is a good way to get through the week! Also, there's nothing wrong with enjoying your weekends and if wine makes its way in there, then I say that's a bonus! :)

My doctor says a glass of red wine is good for the heart. If that is true, imagine what a bottle does for the heart!!!! We taste wines probably 3-4 nights a week. But most of our tastings are done with great homecooked meals.

That's the way to do it! A nice meal, good company, and a bottle of wine!

What about when there isn't a good meal around, do you ever find yourself eating fast food with a nice bottle of wine? :)
