Or if you are unable to write, try to take a photo of the label. Many cell phones have cameras so it is easier to do.

That's a great idea! I also sometimes take the bottle and/or cork with me but that has a lot to do with the fact that I have a real problem with collecting bottles. At one point I had so many of them, they completely consumed my kitchen.

On a side note, any good ideas of things to do with the empties?

I send my empty bottles to recylcing. I have seen some cool lights though made with bottles.

I do keep my corks though, and recently used them to make a trivet. I still have a ton of corks still and need to do something with them too.

I've seen a cool cheese tray made from melting down and flattening the bottles... wonder if I could do it at home.

The coolest thing I've seen with corks is to make a little cork Christmas tree. A friend of mine made one for me by gluing a bunch of corks to a Styrofoam cone. Turned out really cool!
