Brasset's Blue Zin

Wine Whore Review:

"Life is like playing a violin solo in public and learning the instrument as one goes on." - Samuel Butler

When it comes to learning the instrument of life, one man has done the equivalent of the drum solo "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" (substitute wine for the hallucinogenics, of course!). Paul Brasset's career as a winemaker in the Healdsburg area began in 1978 when he helped start one of my favorite wineries, Clos Du Bois.

Since then, Paul has made his mark in the wine industry through his work at the following wineries:

  • White Oak Winery (13 years)
  • Pezzi King
  • Christopher Creek
  • Kenwood
  • Fritz Cellars (helped start)
  • Roshambo Winery (helped design)

Is that all? Did I forget one?

Today, Paul's winemaking career is still going strong. You can find him working as a consultant winemaker for Bluenose Wine where he applies his industry experience by pursuing his passion for Zinfandel. He has also opened Hudson St. Wineries, a new cooperative tasting room with five other wineries in Healdsburg.

Paul admits that his heritage inspired the funny name for his Blue Zin...

"Paul was born in Nova Scotia, where the people are known as Bluenoses. The lore goes back many years, perhaps relating to the fishing boats that had blue painted bows, or the Bluenose potatoes which were imported and then distributed from there. His connection is to the famous Bluenose fishing schooner which can be seen on the Canadian dime. As a sailor and Nova Scotian, it seemed like a perfect fit."

As a followup to the 2005 release which was acclaimed by Wine Enthusiast, he is proud to have just released his Bluenose 2006 Sonoma County Zinfandel. Paul believes this vintage is even better than last year's version.

Lucky for me, I have the chance to try both!

I'll be tasting the following wines crafted by Paul Brasset for a side by side comparison between the two vintages:

Bluenose Dry Creek Valley California Zinfandel 2005
Bluenose Sonoma County California Zinfandel 2006

Stay tuned for the wine review comparison of these selections!

Also, make sure to check out Hudson St. Wineries from 11:00am-5:00pm Saturdays and Sundays.

Call 707-799-0884 for appointments and more information.

Very special thank you to Paul and all of the other folks from Bluenose Wines for their kindness, support, and willingness to share a glass of their wine for the rest of the world to enjoy.

Me too! These look like some great Zins... should be fun to see how they compare between the two vintages.

Thank you for stopping by... always a pleasure to see you!

That should be fun. I'll be interested in reading about the differences and hearing which you prefer. I love a good zin and would so be going to check them out if I was anywhere close.

Hello Shelly! Thank you for enjoying this post! I wish I lived closer too... hopefully I'll get the chance to head back out to the west coast this fall, I've been dying for a road trip. :)
